Flower Show Mania!

Living in New England brings its own challenges, winter being one of them. So when March rolls around, we collectively let out a sigh of relief that spring is soon on its way! And there's no better harbinger of the season's change than the Boston Flower Show!
Greeted with incredible scenery such as this, you enter smelling the sweet air of fragrant bulbs, hearing the chirps of (albeit piped-in sounds) birds. Heck, even the mulch smells good! One of my best friends, Traci, and I ventured into Boston and we had a great day followed by a yummy dinner at Legal Seafood on Boston Harbor, complete with some tasty wine (obvi)!
One of the neat things about the flower show, is the highlighting of so many garden elements, from stonework to plantings, to just plain whimsy! Here is a beautiful pairing of tulips and hyacinths in dramatic color blocking to show off the incredible stonework.
He looks like he's about to fly away!
I love how they showcase the river stones on the right, coupled with the sectioned gravel all mixed with the wood planking  This whole set-up makes me want to have a seat with a glass or two, but all the "Keep Off" signs won't let me near :(
This domino-style wall was so cool! The mortar, if they used any, was so well-hidden and the wall was as sturdy as could be, despite the feeling like it was a big chain of dominos tipping over.
I can't even wrap my pea brain around this globe, or around the effort that it took to create this incredible ball! Awesome!
And if I hadn't had eight knee operations from my days as a college lax player, I could actually bend down and show you the mushroom stems, instead of this not-so-great view from the top. Oy!
Now that I'm looking at this owl, I regret not buying him! I need a little wisdom these days!
The way they used the twigs and vines to make what's known as "wattle", is simply incredible!
Wrapped in a spiral, the display of tulips is jaw-dropping!
Then, there are the scenes and vignettes that just catch your breath. I write copious notes detailing the varieties of plants, take pictures and promise myself that whatever I'm seeing is exactly what I'm going to plant this year! That is, until I get home, life takes over, I lose my notebook and I struggle with the weeds. But hope springs eternal, so maybe this is my year?
Like this? Maybe I can build a cabana with a groovy fixture, grab some China Seas fabric and outdoor rugs? Where's my cabana boy when I need him?
I think in a former life, I must've lived in a French palace or an English estate filled with topiary, because I can never get enough!
And living garden walls are all the rage. See the ivy planted with the pansies? Genius!

Yup, this is just what it looks like outside my window when the weather is warmer. So pretty!
As a flower arranger, I love seeing the annual flower competition between the Massachusetts clubs. I entered one year and got an Honorable Mention. Not a surprise, since like most things I do, I work fast and close to deadline. Not my best trait, but I have fun! (plus, I hate arranging to a set of rules:) This arrangement was stunning!
And just check out the designer's materials list!

Some of the classes are really tricky. This one involved an arrangement suspended in the circle, and then the interpretation was left to the designer.

I liked this the best of the three, but the judges weren't fans. This got honorable mention too.
Though you can't see it in this picture, this arrangement was part of a competiton class that celebrated architecture. The coolest part of the arrangement was that the protea was placed behind and in front of the glass through cut circles. The juxtaposition of glass and materials all at different angles, was a lot like Frank Lloyd Wright's famous house, Falling Water.
One of my favorite categories is the tablescape division (this is the same class I competed in). I loved this arrangement and combo of elements, but alas, it only got a third place ribbon. I met a lady who had won a blue ribbon, and she told me that to compete in this division, "less is more." Aha! That's my problem all along! Doubtful I could ever abide by THAT rule!
Ahhhhh, and then there is the WHIMSY! The best part of the show! Don't you just LOVE this train rambling through these sweet gardens?

I feel like little trolls or elves are about to pop out!
This bike with (yet more topiaries) had me at "hello"!
I really DO need a puppy! It's getting bad, as any of my friends will tell you!
I love how the designer of this bike wrapped literally every part with flowers, cord etc, all but the gears!
I see a DIY post coming up soon with these babies! SO awesome! Octopus using sea urchins and air plants. How easy!

Even wedding cakes made the show! The "flowers" here are constructed using cupcake liners. Super clever! And I love the daisies planted in the Oreo-covered pudding.
Sylvia Weinstock, eat your heart out! Gorgeous!
And who wouldn't want this cake at a party celebrating spring?
And then there is the shopping! Easter baskets? Check!
Stunning terrariums? Yes, please!

I spy, with my little brown eye...

 …gorgeous gardens, but something else?

Stainless steel stripers! I am now the proud owner of a family of five stripers, and also some mackerel to lead the way (since that's what they're chasing in the ocean anyway!). You can find a whole slew of different fish from this incredible Maine company, Fish in the Garden. My cousin, Eliza, owns the blue fish, my friend, Traci, owns the orange fish and I, of course, have the steel. Super fun!
And we couldn't end the show without stopping at the super-cute "selfie station"! They had all these floral frames ready for you to take a pic, so why not?
CHEERS!

Roses are Red! The EASY Valentine's Shopping Guide

The groundhog may have predicted only six more weeks of winter, but in some places in the country, they are looking at snow! So, if you are stuck inside, for whatever reason, or just need to do some shopping for your honey, here is a quick and EASY gift guide to get you ready for a big day of LOVE! These are all available online and you still have enough time, so get going! I've given you a bit of this and that for guys and mostly gals, (hint hint to my hubby) and a range of prices. Some gifts are here purely for eye candy because I know they will never be in my future, but alas a girl can dream, right?

For the Foodie
When I worked with Jane Scott Hodges at Leontine Linens, I was treated to a few days in NOLA (New Orleans for the uninitiated) and bestowed with the knowledge of some of her favorite haunts. Sucre was most definitely one of them. This collection of "For the Love of Chocolate and Sweetheart Macarons" for $72 would hit the spot of any sugar loving valentine! They also do a mean Mardi Gras bagel complete with the baby! (p.s. I know there's an accent on the "e", for all you grammarians, but I can't figure out how to add it here :)

For the Inner Hippie
When my son worked for a film special effects company in LA, I had the pleasure of spending many days poking around SOCAL. I fell in love with the area, or at the very least, I could EASILY have a little beach bungalow! Everyone there was SO nice and relaxed and super friendly (it almost weirded me out until this New England girl got "chill" herself!) A Santa Monica store named Krickette is where this clutch is from, but you can find it at the great website Taigan . Oh and it's on sale for $78.40

For the Altruist
I LOVE (the unfortunately named) Lauren Bush Lauren's Feed Project! She garnered her fashion sense and altruism and made this cool company where you not only want to own all her goodies, but the gifts also just happen to raise a whole lotta money to feed kids all over the world. Wish I'd thought of it. Anyway, why not buy your sweety (or yourself) this bracelet? For each one purchased, you provide 5 school meals for children around the globe.
It's a win, win, win at only $18!

For the Bookish Ones
I say "ish" because if you're looking for a serious read, this isn't it. But, if like me, you've stumbled upon Lee Radziwill's first book, Happy Times, (like I did at the Gorsuch store at the base of Vail Mountain) you became a fan and wanted to see more! This book is a pictorial guide with each chapter devoted to a VIP in Ms. Radziwill's life. It's like candy for the brain. What better day than Valentine's Day for this than that? You can find it on Amazon for less, but the selling price is $50.

For the Flower Lover
Olive and Cocoa is a catalogue I wait to devour every time it arrives in my mailbox. The pictures are stunning, and of course, I can't help myself but gravitate to their beautiful arrangements. For Valentine's Day there is nothing nicer than a simple heart. This one is so stunning and clearly not simple. It does requires next day shipping, but the Jolie Le Coeur, ($138) literally translating to "pretty heart" steals the show and my you-know-what.

For the Mixologist
In case you were having a heart attack at the prices of the fab gifts listed thus far, here's one that's sure to make you smile! This set of two silicone ice cube trays from Williams Sonoma come in at a tidy $12.95. Can't tell if they'd work for jell-o shots, but I'm game! Who's in?

For the Tablescaper
I think David Hicks', India's famous designer dad, (did you see my post on meeting the uber-cool India Hicks herself? Read all about it by clicking on her name :)! Anyway, David and now India, among others, are famous for their tablescapes. Basically that means that they artfully arrange objects, books etc. on tables and make them look all purty. These decoupage trays from Pottery Barn ($16.50-$24.50) will add just the perfect touch and every time you see them, you'll smile.

For the Cool Guy
Someday, I would LOVE to meet Kiel James Patrick and his gorgeous fiancĂ©, Sarah, the masterminds behind his eponymous, and every prep's dream, company. Guys and girls can wear the aptly named Nantucket Lifeguard bracelet, (I'll do anything to mention Nantucket in every post of mine - lol)  at only $40, made next door to me in tiny Rhode Island, it features his iconic anchor. You'll all be thanking me later!

For the Gamer
Going "Old School" for this one! I can't say I'm a fan of cribbage, although my dad did try to make me one on more than a few occasions. But I LOVE backgammon, and this combo is really snappy and cool! It's from Mark and Graham and you can even have it monogrammed all for $99! Commence angels singing!

For the Late Riser
I'm not a huge robe fan, since I mostly sleep in a t-shirt, but then maybe I should be? I would look SO much better scooting to the loo in the morning in this robe, rather than schlepping my not-so-hot bod in just a t-shirt. I love pretty much anything from Roberta Roller Rabbit, and this robe in the Jemina pattern ($85) just may make a convert of me yet!

For the Classic Glam Gal
If you've been a fan of this blog, (thank you), then you know a few things about me already. I LOVE Nantucket, and most of my jewelry I wear is made by my best college friend, Meg Carter, through her company Meg Carter Designs. This beautiful "Sloane Square" choker of champagne pearls ($265) would be the perfect "wow" gift, and an easy pass for whatever the night holds later! Because Meg's my friend (check out her studio in my post about her the stunning Meg Carter jewelry), she's kind enough add length to her necklaces. Since this choker is 16" long, and a wee bit too small for my neck, I know who to call! She's so nice, she might even do the same for you!

For the Cheese Lover
SO simple and yet so fun! This heart shaped bamboo cutting board and cheese knife from one of my all-time faves Terrain, is only $48! I can easily see myself using this goodie on board the mighty Seyon or in my retro RV, Torpedo!

For the Mermaid
You had me at hello! Though I'd always known of Cross Jewelers because of the catalog, it wasn't until a couple of summers ago, while on board the mighty Seyon, that we took a lay day in Portland. The ocean was way too rough so we pulled in and had a blast, and a few bloodies and shrimp may have fallen into our mouths, oops! But when I walked into Cross Jewelers, It was more than love at first sight!  This bracelet spells "I LOVE YOU" in code flags and is the perfect gift for any mermaid in your life. $495

For the Candy Addict
Sending someone a Sugarwish is one of the coolest ways to send your sweetheart some sweets! I have sent so many of these to my kids and they LOVE getting them because they get to select what kind of candy as their "wish". Their goodies then arrive in a beautifully presented box with a pretty red bow. The Wish & Dish ($95) allows the recipient to choose four of their favorite kinds of candy AND receive a sweet dish to put it in! Yum!

For the Alpine Chic
In the most definite SPLURGE section, this Wolfgangsee jacket ($895) from Gorsuch is my pick! If only I could fit in one as nicely as the model, but hey, I'm working on it! Made with boiled wool and replete with stag buttons, this is sure to catch any apres ski crowd's eye.

For the Fabulous One
Burberry is one of those staples in life that somehow everyone should own, or if not, hopefully inherit a piece. From their iconic scarves, to their jackets and everything in between, you just feel a little more chic and a bit British when adorned with Burberry. This Horseferry Check and Zip Around Wallet, is also in the OMG splurge category, but go big or go home, right?

There you have it! Get your shopping on! And no matter what, tell everyone you love how much they mean to you on Valentine's Day!

Cheers!
